And nothing, nothing has quite as bad of a reputation as them
0:04
to 25 to 300 HPDI. Yeah, I mean, like I said, I've never had the
0:09
counting off one, but I've, I'm glad I haven't because I've heard nothing but bad things about them. Like I've never
0:14
heard one person say anything good about it. The 150s and 200s different stories. It's like, you know, everybody's, oh, it's
0:21
got HPDI is on it. And then they're like, well, kind of HPDI is Yeah, which ones? Yeah, that's always the first
0:27
question. 200s. Oh, okay, then we're good. Yeah. I'll work on that. Or I could, I could think about buying that. But if you
0:34
say 225 and up, yeah, keep it, man. Yeah, I don't even want to
0:39
look at it. And I never understood why. So I guess too much going on. Right? I would say that there's that would be
0:45
probably what you could say is that there's too much going on because I mean, once they're running, I mean, they're mean
0:52
like it's, it's a fast, twerky, it's one little thing goes out and then it's
0:58
expensive, super expensive to keep it running. And that's, I think the biggest problem, especially if you got to pay
1:04
somebody to work on it. I mean, if you got to pay somebody to come work on it, and now you're throwing, you know, six, seven
1:09
$800 parts at it, it can, it can get really pricey. Yeah, I
1:14
guess the biggest problem too, is nowadays working on them. The cost of labor to work on them can exceed the, the worth of
1:24
the engine. And then it really just gets into the point of is
1:28
it worth dumping that kind of money into this engine? Yeah, no, it's probably not. So then just get a repower
1:38
Yeah, that's the answer. Another $30,000 engine on the back of the boat
1:42
Like, no, I mean, I don't, I don't mind them. I kind of like them
1:48
You know, I don't really like working on them anymore. And for that fact right there, is that they have gotten more expensive
1:57
So they've, it's kind of like priced it out of, you know
2:01
there's only so many ways that you can cut costs on repairing
2:05
something. Either A, you're going to get cheap labor. And then you know, how long is it going to take the person to fix
2:11
it? Or B, you're going to get somebody that's expensive, and now you're paying by the time. And so if you get a good
2:18
technician there, and it takes them, you know, eight hours to go through something you're, you know, how much are you going to
2:24
be there 1000 bucks. And, and then you've got to throw a
2:28
couple hundred dollar parts on top of that. So let's say you need a, you know, one of those fuel hoses, or, you know, a VST
2:36
pump or high pressure pump. You know, your bill can go from
2:41
1000 bucks to three, four grand. And, you know, I'd rather just not get involved in that just because of that. It's
2:51
like, I feel bad. You know, here's somebody that's, oh, you know, got a dump four grand into this 20 year old engine. And
2:59
you know, yeah, I just don't like getting in that position where, yeah, you know, because I obviously I don't want to work
3:07
for free either. And I can't all come and go over here and work for, you know, two days on something. And then, you know
3:15
then you got to give them a bill and they're not happy. No one's happy at the end of the day. And I'd rather just not be in that situation
3:24
Now, because somebody commented saying I don't know if they had a 225 to 300. But they were asking what are ways you can
3:30
make them reliable engines. And they said, because, because not everyone can afford, you know, four stroke, I guess. Yeah, but
3:39
really, you know, you might not be able to afford an HPDI of
3:45
that horsepower range either. Yeah, we just end up being a even bigger headache. Yeah. So. So unless you already have it
3:53
you know, like if you already have it, what are some ways to to make them reliable, just clean regularly maintenance it
4:00
and always change out them filters because it seems like fuel is
4:04
yeah, fuels the biggest problem on that and cleanliness. You know, especially on older engines, like you got to keep
4:12
the inside engine clean and especially down here in Florida where you got so much salt air and salt water, that everything
4:18
gets salty. And so if you don't keep that stuff clean, that salt will sit on these components, those fuel rails and your hoses
4:26
and all that stuff. Ignition coils, ignition coils. Yeah, that ignition coil was rough looking, it was super corroded
4:33
Really, those engines as a whole were pretty corroded. Seems like, you know, not not this owner, he actually recently
4:43
bought the boat and you know, the boats actually really clean. But maybe the previous owner never really took the cowling
4:52
off and sprayed it off with some fresh water. You know, probably
4:56
didn't have it serviced that regularly. No. And it came from the keys. Oh, that's right. It came from the big pine. Yeah
5:03
it came from pink pine. And he said, you know, the guy he, you
5:08
know, he'd go out and use it. He'd come back home, he might spray it off with, you know, depending on how much fish guts
5:14
was on it, he'd spray it off a little bit. But that was it like he didn't. Yeah, didn't clean the engines didn't flush them
5:19
Nothing just kind of pulled up to the dock tighter off and
5:23
hopped off like yeah, this owner was like it was pretty rough. Yeah, when he first bought it. I don't. It was a nice boat
5:29
though. Oh, yeah. It was a 25 open contender. He said he spent
5:33
a lot of time detailing it, cleaning it, getting it waxed up
5:37
and all freshened up. Yeah. But the inside of the cowling obviously still has the lasting effects of, you know, sitting
5:45
and being used and abused. Yeah, yeah. Good thing is to always
5:50
every time you service it, you know, use some like CRC or some
5:55
kind of anti corrosive stuff to to prevent it. Spray it off
6:00
after every use when you're out there in saltwater. Yep. And service them regularly. That'll that'll keep them running long
6:08
enough. Oh, for sure. Because once you start neglecting it, I feel like that's when you start having the expensive problems
6:15
And that's when it becomes not. That's when it goes downhill. Yeah, yeah. And I kind of feel also like that's the story for a
6:26
lot of people. So they go out and buy the boat. And here you've
6:30
got this HPDI that was on this boat, and it was sitting for
6:35
eight years somewhere, or, you know, whatever this the case may be, the old owner, you know, would use it, wouldn't clean it
6:42
wouldn't, you know, just kind of abused it. Yeah. And then it let let it sit around for a long time. And then he goes ahead and
6:47
sells the boat and some person buys it. And now they're trying
6:51
to find, you know, a technician to come over and, you know, get
6:55
everything running right again. And now all of a sudden, all these things start popping up because, because it is such a
7:02
powerful engine, and there are, you know, it does have those injector drivers and all these other electronics that control
7:08
it. That's when stuff's gonna start breaking. So you've also got the aspect of, okay, you get the engine, you clean it up, you
7:18
get it all going, you spend, you know, two, three grand, just
7:22
changing filters, cleaning it, servicing, doing all this stuff. Now you put it in the water, and you put that engine up to 5500
7:29
RPMs. And that high fuel pressure now bust a hole in one
7:33
of the fuel lines and all these, an O-ring on an injector is
7:36
messed up. And now the injectors leaking. So there's like all these other legitimate issues that come onto the table. And
7:44
it's like, you know, it's not, you know, a $20 fix either
7:50
These are, you know, the legitimate issues that are a few hundred dollars, if not into the thousands. Yeah. And so how
7:57
many of those hits Can you take before it's like, Oh, my gosh, like, what did I buy
8:03
No, for sure. I mean, that's the thing is, just in general
8:08
they're, they're expensive, you know, even gathering up all the parts for a service. This one had twins. You know, I feel like
8:14
most people would probably have single HP guys, but but how much
8:18
were all the parts on that? It was like, I was like 12 1300 bucks, 1300 bucks and parts. Mm hmm. Twins
8:25
Yeah. You know, if you're doing the service yourself, then it's probably an easier $1300 easier hit, though, because yeah, you
8:35
know, then you start adding labor rates and, and everything and and really, it's just it's expensive to maintain these
8:42
motors. I think if you want to last the biggest thing is oil
8:47
it has to get oil. It has, you know, don't use the cheap
8:51
Walmart, you know, stuff, I got used some, you know, Yama live
8:55
I would say for an API, give it the Yamaha stuff, just because
9:00
it's a finicky engine. So give it that Yamaha oil and make sure
9:03
that oil systems working. Because that's another thing I think happened, like an oil pump or something would go. And if
9:13
there's a kind of a failure where maybe the alarm doesn't go off, or maybe, you know, it doesn't see the oil system
9:18
doesn't, you know, prevent it from not oiling. And now you're out there running that engine with no oil, and it just boom
9:24
they they blow up, which is another big case that would happen to them is there'd be a failure within the oil system
9:32
And so you worked back predominantly when HPDI is were around, like, you've been doing this a lot longer than I have
9:40
What was that like the main thing that would happen when an HPI came in? It's blown up? Or
9:45
Well, those big the three threes? Yeah. I mean, most people be offshore running them, running them hard, and they'd
9:51
either lose oil or something like that. And it would lock up or
9:58
injector drivers, injectors, fuel pumps, how many of them would you see at the marina? Um, how often
10:07
would one come in? Not that often? Really? Yeah. I mean, I can only think of
10:12
probably 15 to 20. Over the 10 years that I was there, probably
10:22
15 to 20 of them that that we'd work on. And out of those, I
10:28
want to say we saw four of them blow up. That's interesting. So if you like this clip, you can watch
