We've got a rub rail up like this
0:02
Got it all the way up to the truck. Got our clamp down there in our rags
0:07
That way it's clamped to a cleat. And that gives us this nice straight edge all the way down
0:12
You can already see this is actually starting to come together pretty smoothly
0:16
It's going to look even better once we get that white insert in there to kind of break up
0:20
You've got the blue black rub rail with the white insert and then the blue and then the white gel coat
0:26
We've got our rub rail here. Pop this thing open. I went with a taco marine
0:34
It's just a semi-rugged vinyl one. Comes with the inserts. And I got the white insert with the black
0:42
Comes with the screws and all that stuff, as well as the in caps, which makes it nice
0:58
Got a rub. opened up but what we're going to do is I'm taking the rub rail down here and I'm
1:05
going to stretch it out on the dock that way I can let it lay in the sun and
1:09
soften up before we put it on you want to let it heat up and soften up
1:15
that way it'll stretch easy it'll it'll it'll go on flush because if you don't
1:21
stretch it before then when you put it on over time it'll either wrinkle or stretch
1:30
Now the reason that I put this on the dock is because I didn't want to put it on the rocks
1:51
because the rocks would scratch it. So this way I got it laid out on the wood where it's not going to scratch any of the
2:00
rub rail let that sit out for maybe like an hour or so get nice and hot and then once
2:07
it's all heated up we roll back up to chickens of course bring it over here and
2:13
start screwing it onto the boat a rub rail here's been sitting in the sun for
2:17
quite some time so she's nice and hot and ready to stick on the boat I'm gonna show
2:23
you a nice little trick that you can do as well with a rub rail so I got truck
2:29
pulled in here, boats right there. And depending on the size of the rub rail that you've got
2:33
what you can do is I'm going to take this rub rail and I'm going to stick it down here on the end of the boat
2:39
and I'm going to stretch it out all the way over there to the bed of the truck
2:42
And then I'm going to clamp it to the bed of my truck. So that way it keeps it nice and stretched tight long and yeah you can do it by yourself doing it like this
3:17
that we've got a rub rail up like this got it all the way up to the truck got our clamp
3:23
down there in our rags that way it's clamped to a cleat and that gives us this nice straight
3:28
edge all the way down it's got some tension on the rub rail so now we can just go down in every
3:35
you know six to eight inches we're going to be putting a screw i want to put all the screws all the
3:40
way down this entire edge until i get to here and then we'll go all the way around putting all
3:46
the screws in. Once we have all the screws in, because this goes in and it gets into the foam
3:51
what I'm going to do is actually we'll take the rib rail back off basically and then put
3:57
sealant around everything and then put them all back in. That way all the screw heads are sealed
4:02
and there's no water going to get into the foam that's in the boat. So now it's just a matter
4:10
of going all the way around here, hitting, drilling all the holes, putting in all the screws
4:16
and then we'll cut it off we've got to put the end pieces back here so back here because of this
4:21
angle you can see we have to take a utility knife and cut that off clean so that way our end piece
4:29
that goes here can go on there now obviously this is not a flat transom so this kind of is going to be a
4:37
little bit um warped i guess you could say but what we're going to do is this is just a plastic piece
4:44
heat this up a little bit with a torch that way it'll kind of mold a little bit and then when
4:48
we screw it on there it'll be flush and it'll look uh it'll look legit now our rub rail actually
4:54
comes with a ton of screws some of these screws depending on which rub rail you get like this is the
5:01
really small rub rail and so if we look at this you can tell that head is actually bigger than the
5:07
rub rail and if you watch whenever we drill into here so we're going to put one here so we're
5:14
Whenever we drill in and we go to put our screw in if you watch, you see how that screw
5:20
does and how the rub rail bends. You see how it's on the outside of that lip
5:26
Now if you go around and just hit that with all these screws and you don't open that up for
5:30
that head to go in there, it's going to actually pinch the rubber of the rub rail and it's
5:35
going to leave marks all the way down that rub rail. For me since it the small one what I did is just I just go ahead and I change these screws out Even though these are panheads and you can see how it got a flat spot on the bottom
5:52
that panhead gives it a surface to hold the rub rail on. I'm going to put the screws closer together and then I'm also
6:00
I'm going to use oval heads or countersinks. That way, when they go in, I can screw them straight in and it will not
6:09
hit that when you put it in it doesn't mark up the rubber so that's just something to be cautious
6:18
about again using the counter sink screws if you do the oval heads you want to put them a lot
6:25
closer together then if you put them with the panheads because the pan head again has that flat
6:32
spot that flat spot is the surface that is used to mate the rubber rail on the counter sink
6:39
the rubber can pop off of the counter sinks. Again, I'm only, I'm gonna go six inches apart for every screw
6:45
That's just something to think about on why they use panheads over countersinks
6:53
All right for this right here, I've actually got it bent in like this. I got both the pencil marks on here and on here
7:00
So now I'm gonna take this and using my knife, roll it up
7:09
Cold that. Boom, right like that. The
7:52
I'm All right we got this side of the rub rail on all the way around Looking good all the way around Got up here got this clipped in nice kind of cut it off with the rub rail there to get that smooth bend all the way around and now I got
8:43
my screws in here but I got this same thing it's all stretched out going all the
8:49
way around I got it wrapped around on the back of the boat and clamp down to the
8:53
back of the trailer so that way I got stretched it's nice and tight and now we need
8:59
to just finish out pulling this in put all the screws in here and then I can cut that off cut those edges off put our
9:08
in pieces on and then we'll be ready to stick the insert into the rubrail
9:13
basically we're just going to start at one end of the boat
9:27
Basically we're just going to start at one end of the boat. We're going to take all the screws out, take the rub rail off
9:33
We're going to lay it on the inside of the boat. And we're going to just go around and hit every one of the holes with some sealant because
9:39
they do go through where the foam is on the boat. And so I'd rather, you know, sometimes you can get away with just not sealing them
9:48
It's a lot of times on a lot of boats, but I'm getting out of sun here
9:52
But for this one, since it goes through and actually gets into where the foam, it's
9:57
is I do want to put some ceiling on each one of these screws. We got the rub rail off and everything set up, got our screws laid out all the way around the boat
10:12
So now it's going to take our sealant and go around and hit each one of these holes with some sealant
10:21
That way we can put our rub rail back on, sit our screws in there, and then
10:27
and we will be moving on to our next project. Because it's hollow, you just squeeze one side
10:46
and push it in all the way around. You know, if you've got a solid insert
10:52
or another different kind of insert, then you use the mallet, but for this
10:57
This actually goes in pretty slick. You can just squeeze it and push it in
11:03
I'd hate to have to do a big boat like this. Luckily, it's only a 13 footer. You'd be out here all day if you do a 42 footer
11:10
Yeah, people did this on a 42 foot boat. I'm asking for $300 an hour
11:21
Yeah, that looks clean though. Like, that looks clean. Don't clean your room
