There are three main reasons why a GPS will flicker
0:03
If you hit the power button, sometimes it won't even come on, but there are three main reasons
0:07
The first reason is going to be power. Now pretty much all GPS are going to be very similar
0:12
If you take the GPS off in the back of it, you'll see that they have these four little things
0:17
and most of them will be labeled on this one. It's not labeled on the back of the GPS, but if we look here, it is labeled on the back of this little clip thing
0:30
But if you look at the back like this one, you see how it says power right there, and then
0:36
it says XDCR. That is for our transducer. It also says NEMA 2000, but for our situation that really isn't relevant
0:44
I'm just going to clip this back in here for right now
0:48
But you notice this one right here, the power, how it has red all the way around it, that's
0:52
how you know you have your power cable. Now what we need to do because one of the biggest reasons, probably eight times out of ten, that
0:59
these things will flicker or not come on is because of a power issue
1:03
We're in here rewiring our console getting that all set up but I'm to the point of needing
1:09
to do the GPS. Now this GPS would sometimes have that same kind of issue
1:16
If you look at this fuse after you follow your wire this is the wire where you're going
1:21
to have to get behind the GPS and just basically you need to see where your GPS wire comes
1:27
out and follow it. you get down to here, pretty much all of them are going to have a fuse on them. Now the ground
1:34
is one of very, very important thing. You need to make sure that it has a good ground on it
1:38
that this is connected a lot of times. If your GPS is flickering, usually this ground right
1:43
here is either dirty or it is loose. Now on this one, I don't have an end on it just yet because
1:48
I'm getting ready to hook it up, but that's what you're going to want to check is for a loose
1:53
or dirty ground, which is this black wire on the end of this cable. Then the next thing, for
1:58
our power issue is going to be this fuse here If you notice this one the person cut it super short but a lot of these are exactly like this And if we look at this fuse if you take this thing apart I can even get this thing apart
2:14
Okay, there it goes. So here is where a lot of them have a problem
2:20
If you notice this fuse is like a barrel, but you can see around the edges of the fuse, how it's all corroded, it's salty, it is discolored, and I can barely even pull it apart
2:31
Look, that one took a lot to get it out and you can see how dirty and corroded it is around this
2:37
That is generally where they're going to be messed up and why they're going to flicker because they're not getting power
2:44
And then like this one, to get it off the other side, same thing. You can see how salty it is and how messed up and dirty the fuse is basically
2:53
But if you want to, if your GPS is flickering and it won't come on, this is one of the number one spots that you need to check is this fuse
3:01
use right here again because if you look this isn't really I mean that's not a watertight seal
3:06
so if you have moisture in your console which most people do and look at this that wire is about
3:13
the break if I just look at that that just snapped off there so that was probably the main reason
3:19
why this thing had an issue so we're going to be replacing this and fixing this issue because it's
3:25
very very common for that to be our issue so check that fuse we're going to be
3:31
be changing this one out completely and we actually have we're going to be getting
3:36
rid of that one because now we have our GPS on a breaker here which has a breaker here
3:42
to turn it on turn it off that break right there is going to eliminate the need for
3:46
having this fuse but as you can see that wire just completely pulled out and was
3:52
all messed up now the next reason why these are going to fail or flicker or give you
3:59
kind of trouble is because of a firmware update. If your GPS is not updated, that is a reason
4:07
why they will flicker and a lot of times it is because they are having an issue with the transducer or whatever So if you check your firmware or the software that is on the GPS
4:20
most of them you have to take an SD card like this. You have to go to, like this one is Garmin
4:26
You got to go to Garmin.com and then you look up the GPS. This is an EcoMap CV
4:31
So we would have to go to Garmin.com and look up an EcoMap CHRP 54CV
4:37
and we would be able to get the updated firmware for this
4:43
download that. You put it on the SD card, and then you have to put the SD card in here
4:47
and then you will be able to update the unit through that SD card
4:51
which is a very, very, very common issue for GPSs to flicker
4:56
or have an issue like that. And then the last issue for something like this
5:01
for this screen to be flickering, is an issue with the transducer
5:06
A lot of them have either, NEMA 2000 or a transducer that is ran through a hub
5:10
If it's ran through a hub and there is a problem with the hub, again, software update, anything
5:16
like that, or a problem with the actual transducer where it's back feeding voltage to the
5:21
unit, it will jack up your unit and give you all kinds of issues that you'll need to mess
5:27
with in order to get it to stop flickering. It's almost like it's getting feedback coming from the transducer
5:34
This one's just a single transducer going straight to the back of the unit, so you don't see it as much as you do with units that are using a hub or a GSD box or something like that where there is, it's almost like there's voltage being put back to the unit or same thing for NEMA 2000
5:50
If you have a problem on your NEMA 2000 network where there is power getting fed to the unit when it shouldn't get power fed to it or just anything like that
6:01
You know, if you start messing with power going to it or from it, you're robbing it from power, that will cause issues
6:07
issues and that voltage will make it flicker because it's almost like it's getting low voltage
6:13
So when it comes to troubleshooting the actual transducer or troubleshooting your NEMA 2000 the easiest way to do this is going to be to actually just remove it from the system so like on a unit like this you just going to
6:28
flip this back up here like this we can pop this out and this thing right here so this little
6:34
clip right here you're just going to like pull up and out and it'll pop out and then you can
6:38
actually just pull the wire out of there and once you pull that wire out of there then
6:43
you can just reconnect the unit to the box. So that way you can try and turn it on and run and operate the unit without the transducer
6:54
being in the system. Same thing for the Neiman 2000. If you're going to test the Neiman 2000, you would just disconnect it and try and use the unit
7:04
without that in the system. Now, if you have a fish finder, that's going to be a little bit different because obviously
7:11
a fish finder is only for a fish finder. finder or finding fish, whereas this being an echo map, it's actually got a GPS to it
7:19
So you would be able to disconnect the NEMA 2000 or the transducer and then just use this as a
7:25
GPS and see if it'll flicker or if it has any kind of issues without that being plugged in
7:31
And that will kind of help you narrow down whether it is your Nima 2000 or the transducer
7:35
that is causing your unit to flicker because it's either robbing or supplying power
7:40
which is messing with the power that the unit sees. Same thing if you have not enough
7:47
like you might have voltage like this being a broken fuse or a bad connection
7:52
you might have voltage there, but you won't have the amperage to run the unit
7:56
Same thing for the transducer. If the transducer is messed up and it's pulling too much power from the GPS
8:02
that is another reason why it's going to make it flicker because it's basically running out of power
8:07
That is the most common reason for it to flickers because it's losing power
8:12
So those are the three things for you to check if your GPS is flickering or if it won't come on at all
8:17
If it won't come on at all, usually that is going to be that fuse or the ground unit down here
8:22
You just had to file your wire and make sure you have good, clean connections and that the fuse isn't messed up
