So I want to see if we can save this steering Gaming Helm
0:04
When I took the nut off, you can see those threads are just trashed
0:07
It's all messed up. So I want to take this off of the cable. Pretty easy to get this thing off
0:12
You just pull these little pins back here. This really doesn't do anything. But you pull this one. And once you pull that pin, then you can just push in on this
0:19
And there's like a little thing in here that you can push down
0:23
And when you push that down, this little thing will go down. The pins don't always work, so I like to grab a pick
0:30
to make it easy and you can push down on this. And when you push that down, then we can actually turn this steering helm and then it'll
0:37
make this cable come out. So pull this thing off and we will pull the cable out, take this in and see if we can fix this
1:00
And just like that, we've got our helm out, and now we can take this in here, and I want
1:07
to see if we can fix this. This is actually a really common thing
1:11
It's a lot more common than you might think. Even if you try and use the hammer trick, you can bust the threads
1:17
That's common when you use the hammer. But then you can also even try and use the jaw puller, but sometimes the jaw puller doesn't work
1:26
Like on this jaw puller here, I've got really big ends. so you can't get under the steering wheel
1:31
I mean, look at all this rust and stuff. Even if you crawl it up, sometimes it'll stick on there
1:35
Even though this isn't really where the steering wheel rides, you can see where the steering wheel rides right here
1:41
Down around the bottom, it rests on there. But look at all these grooves
1:45
Like you can hear my thumb catching on all those grooves. That is where the steering wheel itself, actually, like
1:52
if you look in here, I mean, you can see the grooves where the steering wheel is basically welding itself onto the helm And so what we got to do is see if we can clean up down to the bottom of these threads enough to where we may be able to get a nut to stick onto the threads here on
2:11
the bottom. This might not be salvageable. These are pretty bad, but let me go ahead. And
2:16
first thing I want to do is I'm going to take a grinder and try and get these to be smoothed
2:22
out around the top. So I'm going to take my polisher here with the sanding pad on it. I need
2:28
to change that pad out that's pretty worn down but I'm gonna kind of round this over a
2:32
little bit so that way I can get down to where I've got some good threads to work with
2:38
and then once I get down there even though this is probably the bottom thread that I'm gonna get to
2:42
but you can see I can probably chip that one off and grind these down a little bit to get down
2:46
there and then hopefully put a thread chase on there to thread those out
2:58
I've got a pretty well ground down all the way around
3:08
Problem is now this is the issue area there where I need to knock this thread off and
3:15
then I should be able to get this thing to kind of work good
3:21
So I'm going to see if I can't take a pick and kind of knock that off and in order to get
3:25
a thread chaser on there. I do not know if I have anything bigger enough. This is just a thread chasing kit or thread
3:32
cleaning kit. Rethreading kit. I don't know if I have anything big enough. So I've got the
3:38
nut here and I'm going to try and take one of these, stick it in here and see if I could find
3:43
the right threads and then I'll match the thread chaser with it. So I think it's this half inch by 20
4:01
If I put this up on the threads you can see those match up real nice like that So I do think it this half inch by 20 So now I just need the half inch by 20 thread chaser
4:19
So that's what we're going to use. And now I just need to knock that thing off and then see if I can get this to thread on there
4:34
I was able to knock that one piece off, but now the problem is that right here, you can see how that's folded over
4:46
So I need to take the grinder and grind that little section right there off to open this thread up
4:54
And then once I get that opened up, then we'll be able to use the thread chaser or the rethread or whatever you call it
5:04
It's definitely not the most pretty thing, but it's enough to where we should be able to get that thread chaser
5:19
If you can see, you've knocked all those down. You can actually kind of see the threads are knocked down
5:24
It's kind of hard to focus on this, but those threads, I've knocked them down to where that thread chaser should start
5:31
So I should be able to get the thread chaser on here in order to get it to start and then tighten it up and be able to run down on these threads and get a nut started on there
6:01
I'm well it's definitely not the prettiest thing but it is enough to run a nut on there i mean we ground that down and connected all the threads so we should be able to
6:38
go ahead and stick a nut on here and run the nut down
6:43
Now we've got to figure out how far our steering wheel sits down on here
6:48
and whether or not we can get a washer with a nut on all these threads enough to catch
6:54
because we do have one thread there at the top. I should probably go ahead and take this top thread off
7:00
because it doesn't really do anything, but it does help to get the nut started
7:05
So try and put a nut on here. So here's our nut and now I'm into the nilocks and yeah this is gonna work
7:19
Really there's not a whole lot of threads on there. I mean we'll be able to get a nut on there but
7:25
as soon as you put that washer on there it's only gonna hit like one and a half threads
7:32
So not the greatest. I mean I could go without the washer
7:38
It'll work without the washer. I mean, really, that is not that bad
7:51
I'm going to say this is going to be good to go without the washer. I could maybe try and find a smaller washer
7:55
but I don't know if it really matters or not, because once you stick this string wheel on there
8:01
within a couple of days, the thing's not going to want to come off. So it looks like we did save this
8:05
and that's going to work just the way it is, even though, you know, I mean, a new helm with cable is only like $200
8:11
I mean, $200, $250, something like that. So not too bad of a savings, and it did work
