A cheap and easy way to make your engine look a lot better is to just put a fresh coat of paint on it
0:14
Now, no, the way you are about to see will not come out looking like a $600 to $1,000 professional paint job
0:23
but depending on your skills and the amount of time you spend on this project, you can make this look really close to it
0:29
it. And I am by no means a professional painter, as you will see, so anyone that is really
0:34
good at painting, let us know some tips that you know in the comments section below
0:38
By far the best way to paint anything is to spray it on with a real paint gun, and when
0:43
it comes to fiberglass, a lot of people prefer all grip. Again, let us know what you prefer in the comments
0:49
But we won't be using either of those because we're showing you how to get it done for
0:53
under a couple hundred bucks, so we will be using a can of spray paint
0:59
But this is a paint that is made for outboards, inboard engines, stern drives, and lower units
1:06
You can get a ton of different colors. It's made by molar and I'll put a link to these in the description
1:11
We are actually using a quicksilver primer and clear coat though. These seem to be the cheapest cans that I could find and it's primer and clear coat that
1:19
is specifically made for boat engines. For everything that we are going to paint, we used six cans of primer, which gave us two
1:26
coats on everything, then we used five cans of the actual paint, which was two to three
1:31
coats on everything, and then four cans of the clear coat, giving everything three coats
1:36
of clear coat. Now to get started, we need to get the cowlings off the engine, as well as any of the chaps
1:44
or anything that you're going to paint. Once you get everything off, we'll take a razor blade and carefully pull off all the stickers
2:04
and decals that are on the calling. Once we get all those off there an extremely important step that you don want to skip And that to de everything The last taker want on anything that you are going to paint is grease and grime
2:29
Plus the grease will get into the sandpaper when we go to sand everything down as well
2:33
So just use some cheap dollar store degreaser to get all the grease off
2:39
And then we'll sand everything with 220 grit sandpaper. I just used an orbital sand dirt that works really
2:45
well and you are going to want to wear a mask for this entire process as well
3:15
I'm not going to be. But once you've got everything sanded down, we'll take what is called a tack cloth
3:54
and wipe down everything to get all the dust off the callings. You can get this at Home Depot or Lowe's for about three bucks a pack so they are cheap to get
4:07
Then once we've got all the dust off, we'll want to tape off all the rubber
4:12
gaskets that are on the cowlings around the bottom. Then sometimes there might be some
4:33
removable ones like here on the sides of the back calling of this engine With the callings clean sanded taped and wiped down you can either go around the callings and fix any of the scratches or marks that you have or you can go ahead and spray them with the primer if you are not worried about the marks
4:50
We didn't fix any of the marks on these callings, but when it comes to spraying anything like this
4:56
make sure you watch out for which way the wind is blowing because you don't want to get any overspray on anything
5:02
like your boat or car or something that you don't want to get paint on. And then you will also want to get one of these things here
5:09
They are only like $5 or so, and it's basically just a spray handle that the cans will fit in
5:15
They give you a trigger to use when painting. If you're going to be spraying a lot, you won't want to do it without this
5:21
We'll just shake up the can of primer for about a minute once the ball starts to rattle around
5:32
And when it comes to spraying, you want to begin spraying, to the side of whatever you are painting
5:38
Then move slowly across your object and stop spraying on the other side
5:43
Then begin spraying on that side and slowly back across the object to the other side
5:48
Moving in the same consistent motion and working your way evenly up or down or across whatever
5:54
you are painting. Again, I'm not a great painter, so I can tell you that you are supposed to put the paint
5:59
on wet, or I guess you would say thicker and evenly as you paint your object
6:04
But most of the time I'm painting too quickly, which is making the paint go on too thin or not wet enough
6:10
So try and move slower and evenly when you paint, allowing the paint to go on smoothly
6:15
You'll want to put two coats of the primer on, and depending on the temperature of where you are
6:20
you will want to put one coat on. Then once the paint is dry to the touch, go ahead and put the second coat on
6:27
In the heat here, even in the shade, we could put on the second coat in only like 10 to 20 minutes of spraying the first coat
6:34
Then once that has dried, we are going to sand the primer back down before painting
6:38
You can use either 220 grit paper again, but you can still see some of the marks if you only
6:44
use the 220, so depending on how smooth of a finish you want, you can hit it up with 320
6:50
for a smoother finish. This will also hold true when spraying on the paint
7:04
I gonna So You can sand it in between coats and then tack cloth the dust off in between your coats for a smoother finish
7:47
I think it just depends on how well you can put the paint on though. I don't know if professional painters sand between coats or if they can put all the layers on evenly without
7:56
having to sand in between the coats. I know that if you put it on like I have after
8:01
the two coats of paint it will begin to develop this orange peel type of a finish
8:06
You can get rid of this by making sure you are subscribed to the channel and
8:10
turning that like button blue but getting rid of that orange peel finish will
8:13
require you to just sand the calling again with the 320 before your last coat of
8:18
paint or you can just apply your last layer and continue on to spraying the
8:23
calming down with three layers of clear coat. Which doesn't look bad, but once you get really close to it, you can see the texture
8:46
and the finish. A lot of people won't notice this, but you can tell it isn't that smooth mirror finish
8:56
It's super shiny though and the paint's not going to fall off so for only a couple hundred bucks it's way better than what it was
9:05
But let us know how you do it in the comments section below. Thanks for hanging out with us this week
