I’ve got a dash panel on this project boat that’s beat up, faded, and honestly just looks tired. Instead of buying a replacement, I decided to paint it myself with basic engine enamel. The catch was the engraved labels — bilge pump, nav lights, interior lights, aerators, all that stuff cut into the panel — and one seriously ugly hole some previous owner drilled with zero technique. Here’s how I sanded, prepped, and sprayed this dash back to life, and what I’d do differently next time.
Why It Matters
A tired-looking dash doesn’t affect how your boat runs, but it affects how it feels to be on the water — and it’s one of the first things anyone notices when they step aboard. In Florida, sun exposure chews through gelcoat and panel finishes fast, so this isn’t a one-and-done problem. If your dash is faded, chipped, or has old drilled holes that look rough, a repaint is a cheap fix compared to sourcing a replacement panel, which may not even be available for an older boat.

Step-by-Step Guide
1. Assess the Panel and Plan Around the Engraving
The dash has engraved labels for things like the bilge pump, interior lights, starboard/port aerator, and timer. Painting over the panel fills these in, so before starting I knew I’d need to make cheap labels afterward to mark what each switch does. I also pulled the sticker off one dial that I’m not using for anything functional — I’ll probably just slap a joke label on it since it won’t do anything.
2. Fix Your Drilling Technique Before You Ever Get Here
One hole on this panel was completely blown out on both the front and back, off-center, and just ugly — clearly drilled with a large bit (half-inch, three-eighths, that range) run in the standard direction. If you ever need to drill a big hole in fiberglass or paneling, run the bit in reverse. It won’t blow out the material and it’ll look clean instead of destroyed. This is a lesson for next time, not something I could fix on this panel.
3. Sand Down the Old Finish
I started with 150/120 grit sandpaper to strip the existing finish off the panel. It chips off fairly easily once you get into it. This step took longer than expected — sanding off an old finish by hand isn’t fast, and if I’m honest, I’d rather have used a chemical stripper first.
4. Do a Final Prep Sand
Once the bulk of the old finish is off, hit the whole panel with 220 grit to smooth it out and get it ready for paint.
5. Wipe Down with Acetone
Before spraying, wipe the entire panel down with acetone to clean off dust and residue from sanding.
6. Prop the Panel Up for Even Coverage
Don’t paint it flat on a table — prop it up so you can spray it evenly from all angles. I used an Anzo Engine Super Starter box as a stand, which worked perfectly for holding the panel at a workable angle.
7. Spray in Even, Consistent Passes
Keep the can roughly the same distance off the panel the whole time and spray back and forth in even passes. It’s spray paint, so if you mess up a section, you can sand it and go again. I got a little aggressive with mine in spots, which is fixable, but slow down and stay consistent instead of rushing it.
8. Let It Dry and Check for Missed Spots
Once it’s dry, look it over in direct sunlight — that’s where flaws actually show up. I flat out missed painting the edges the first time and had to catch it after the fact. Check the edges, not just the face of the panel.
9. Let the Paint Cure Before Reinstalling Anything
Give it real time to harden before you touch it. I put screws and the switches back in after about a day, but I held off on the gauges and steering wheel because the paint was still soft — I actually smudged it trying to install a gauge too soon. Wait another day or two before putting anything back in that requires pressure to seat.
10. Reassemble and Label What You Filled In
Once everything’s fully cured, reinstall the gauges, GPS, and remaining hardware. Even with the engraving painted over, most of the original text was still legible through the black — livewell control center, timer, manual/auto, port/starboard aerator, nav lights, interior lights, bilge pump, horn. I didn’t end up needing labels for most of it, but keep that plan as a backup if your panel’s text disappears completely under paint.
Pro Tips
- Drill big holes in reverse. Anytime you’re using a large bit (1/2″, 3/8″, etc.) in fiberglass or paneling, running it in reverse prevents blowout on both sides and gives you a clean, centered hole instead of a wrecked one.
- Give soft paint real time before reinstalling hardware. A day isn’t always enough — I smudged fresh paint trying to seat a gauge too early. Wait two full days minimum before anything that requires pressure or contact.
- Check your work in direct sunlight, not shop lighting. Missed spots and uneven coverage show up in the sun that you won’t catch under garage lights.
Final Verdict
This is a legitimately easy weekend project if you’re patient with the drying time. Sanding took longer than I wanted, and I’ll admit I stink at painting — I missed the edges completely on the first pass and smudged a section rushing the reinstall. Even with those mistakes, the panel came out looking a hundred times better than before, and it cost a fraction of sourcing a replacement dash. If your panel is faded or scratched up but structurally fine, this is worth doing yourself.
