Step-by-Step Guide
Drain the Oil
Tilt the engine up for a few minutes to let oil settle into the pan. Remove the 14mm drain plug from the port on the back of the engine, attach a hose or bilge hose to it, then trim the engine down to let the oil drain into a bucket. There’s a washer on the drain plug that likes to stick to the engine — don’t lose track of it.
Change the Oil Filter
Use a filter wrench to break the filter loose, then slow down and watch for oil as you spin it off by hand. If oil starts coming out, snug it back up and let it finish draining. Clean the mounting surface, apply clean oil or a little grease to the new filter’s O-ring, and hand-tighten only.
Change the Fuel Filter
Unplug the water sensor first so it doesn’t twist and snap when you turn the filter cup. Use the right filter wrench (I like the Moto Stock version) to remove the cup. Grease the new filter before installing and go slow starting the threads — if it doesn’t catch right away, back it out counterclockwise until you feel it drop into the first thread, then hand-tighten only.
Replace the Thermostat
Remove the three bolts holding the plastic cover (one on top, two on the side), then the three bolts on the thermostat housing itself. On this engine, the thermostat was stuck open. Clean out the housing with a knife or similar tool before installing the new thermostat and gasket. Grease the bolts before reinstalling.
Spark Plugs
Pull the back strap off to access the plugs. If the plug wires won’t release, twist them clockwise or counterclockwise while pulling. You’ll need a 5/8″ socket to pull the plugs for cleaning or replacement.
Boat-Side Fuel Filter
These are usually in an easy-to-reach spot — on this catamaran it was under a seat in a large access hatch.
Check the Anodes
Inspect the one on the lower unit and the one on the engine bracket. If they’re pitted or breaking down, replace them. Pull the bolts, grease them, and reinstall regardless of anode condition.
Grease the Steering Points
There are five grease points total. For the front ones, you’ll need to turn the engine to get the steering cylinder out of the way.
Pull the Lower Unit
Remove the prop by taking out the cotter pin and the 1/16″ nut. Wedge a piece of wood between the prop and the anti-cavitation plate to keep the shaft from spinning. Remove the trim fin anode (12mm bolt), then the 14mm bolt underneath it. Remove six 14mm bolts along the sides (three per side) to free the lower unit.
If the impeller looks worn or damaged when you pull it, that’s a sign there may be other issues that need addressing before reinstalling.
Reinstall the Lower Unit
Grease the splines on the drive shaft, shift shaft, pitot nozzle, water tube, and locating pins. Confirm the unit is in neutral. Have one greased 14mm bolt ready to hand. Guide the lower unit up until it contacts the drive shaft, then slowly twist back and forth until the splines seat into the powerhead. Pull back slightly, line up the shift shaft, and push it back into place.
Install that one bolt but don’t fully tighten it yet. Put the engine in gear and confirm it shifts properly before installing the rest of the bolts and torquing everything down. Note: twin-engine setups have an “L” stamped under the anode for the counter-rotation gear case.
Reinstall the Prop
Grease the prop shaft, install the thrust washer, grease it and the rest of the shaft, then reinstall the prop and don’t forget the cotter pin.
Fill the Gear Oil
Add oil carefully. Stop about one quart before the recommended full amount and check the dipstick — you want the level toward the upper section between the two holes.
Pro Tips
- Grease everything as you go — bolts, splines, gaskets, steering points. It’s a small step that saves you from seized hardware down the road.
- Watch the oil filter closely as you spin it off. If oil starts weeping out, stop, snug it back up, and let it drain fully before finishing the removal.
- Pull the impeller while you have the lower unit off. Even if it’s not on your service list this round, it tells you if bigger problems are brewing before they strand you on the water.
