Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Try the Handle First
Squeeze the handle. If nothing happens, you’re in the right place. The handle pulls two tabs that hook onto the rear cowling — when the cable breaks or seizes, those tabs don’t release.
Step 2: Remove the Top Cover
Pull out the six screws holding the top cover — four in the back, two in the front. Once the cover’s off, you’ll see the handle assembly.
Step 3: Remove the Handle and Cable
There’s a metal pin behind the handle. Flip it up and pull it out to free the handle and cable from the assembly. With a working cable, pulling up on the handle pulls those two rear tabs. When it’s broken, it doesn’t.
Step 4: Trim the Motor Forward
Before you start dropping bolts into the bilge, tilt the motor forward slightly. Any bolt you drop will roll toward you instead of disappearing into the back of the engine compartment. Simple trick that saves a lot of frustration.
Step 5: Pull the Lower Cowling Latch Bolts
There’s one bolt and one nut on each lower latch. Reach your hand down through the opening, get your fingers under the latch, and lift it up as you work. Do the same on both sides.

With a 15/16″ or 8mm wrench/socket, pull the bolts holding the latch body to the cowling. Once the hardware is out and the cables are disconnected, the latch comes out.
Step 8: Clean Out the Corrosion
This is where it gets ugly. The latches corrode badly — I had to chip away at significant corrosion buildup to free the latch components. Get all of it out before you try to install the new hardware.
Step 9: Set Cable Tension on the New Latch
The cable tension is adjustable. General rule of thumb: start in the middle position. You can fine-tune it after reassembly. Tighten it down there for now.
Step 10: Reinstall the Latch and Route the Cable
Feed the cable back through the latch housing, press it down into position, and slide it through the routing hole. Pull it through from the other end, then reinstall the circlip to lock it in place. Don’t forget to push the rubber grommet back in — it seals the latch opening.
Step 11: Reinstall the Latch Hardware
One side is straightforward. The other is trickier — you have to hold the latch in position while threading the bolt. It’s a 5/16″ bolt. To get the nut started in a tight spot, either fold a small piece of paper into the socket to hold the nut in place, or detach the ratchet head, feed your hand into the cavity, lower the nut to your fingers, guide it onto the stud by feel, then reattach and tighten. It sounds slow — it’s faster than dropping the nut three times.
Step 12: Reinstall the Handle and Top Cover
To reinstall the handle pin, flip the handle down, drop the pin in, then flip the handle up. That creates tension that lets you get the circlip and washer back on cleanly. Adjust the cable tension with two 10mm wrenches if needed. Reinstall the six top cover screws and you’re done.

- Grease every bolt on reinstall. These latches will fail again — it’s a matter of when, not if. If you put the bolts back in dry, you’ll be fighting corrosion all over again next time. A dab of marine grease on each bolt thread takes 30 seconds and makes future removal a lot easier.
- Trim the motor forward before you start wrenching. I mentioned it in the steps, but it’s worth repeating. Dropped bolts in the bilge on a Verado is a terrible day.
- Start cable tension in the middle. Don’t overthink the initial adjustment. Set it at the midpoint, get everything buttoned up, test the handle, and make small tweaks with the 10mm wrenches until the latches click and release cleanly.
Final Verdict
Is this a DIY job? Yes — but it’s not a beginner project. The tight quarters, the circlips, the corrosion cleanup, and the nut-starting gymnastics make it genuinely awkward. That said, if you’re comfortable wrenching and patient with the cable routing, you can absolutely handle this yourself and save a few hundred dollars in shop labor. The parts aren’t expensive. The main cost is time and knuckle skin.
