Florida summer heat destroys carnauba wax. I know because I’ve been fighting it for years. Every month or so, back out with the buffer, reapply, repeat — because the moment your gel coat loses its protection down here, you’re scrubbing the boat every single time you come in from the water instead of just spraying it off. I finally got fed up and tested a polymer sealant (Stark) against my usual carnauba routine. This is how it went.
Why This Matters for Florida Boaters
Down here, the sun isn’t just a nuisance, it’s actively cooking your wax off the boat. Carnauba wax melts in high heat, which means in summer you’re on a roughly one-month cycle just to maintain a surface that sheds water and dirt. The moment the wax is gone, everything sticks: salt spray, algae, fish blood, sand. You go from a quick rinse to a full scrub session every time you come back to the dock.
A polymer sealant is rated to hold up to around 212°F and is supposed to last 3–6 months per application. If that claim holds up, you’re looking at one application for the entire season instead of one per month. That’s a significant time and labor difference.

- Carnauba wax — Traditional wax; easy to apply and remove, gives great shine, but melts off in Florida heat within a month
- Stark Hyper Hold Pro — Polymer sealant, the main product being tested; applied thin, allowed to haze, then wiped off
- Stark Hydro Guard — Polymer replenisher used as a follow-up maintenance product
- Bleach — Used to strip the existing carnauba off the gel coat before applying the polymer
- DA (dual-action orbital polisher) — Preferred application method for the Stark
- Microfiber applicator pads — Used for hand application as an alternative to the DA
- Mother’s Back to Black — Applied to plastic trim and the acrylic windshield
- Colonite metal wax — Used on all metal surfaces
- Degreaser — Spot-used on gunnels and areas where bleach didn’t fully cut the old wax
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Check If Your Wax Is Gone
Spray water on the boat. If it beads up into tight droplets, you still have wax. If it sheets off in a flat film, the wax is gone or nearly gone and it’s time to act. You’ll also feel the difference — a freshly waxed surface is slick; bare gel coat feels slightly grippy.
Step 2: Strip the Old Carnauba
Before applying any polymer, you need to get the carnauba completely off. Apply bleach to the hull and work in sections. Rinse and check the water behavior again — you want full sheeting, no beading, across the entire surface before moving on. Gunnels and tight spots may need a follow-up with degreaser.
Step 3: Dry the Boat Completely
The gel coat needs to be fully dry before the Stark goes on. Don’t rush this.
Step 4: Apply the Polymer Sealant
Apply a thin, even coat using a moist microfiber applicator pad by hand or a foam pad on a DA orbital polisher. Use the DA if you have one. Doing it by hand works — I did the entire outside of the boat that way — but it’s a serious amount of labor and not something you’d want to do regularly. The DA makes this process much faster and more consistent.
Step 5: Let It Haze
Let the product dry to a haze. The manufacturer says you can leave it for over a day and still wipe it off fine — unlike carnauba, which gets nearly impossible to remove if it bakes in the heat. I didn’t test the full overnight wait, but the flexibility is nice.
Step 6: Wipe Off the Residue
Use a clean microfiber towel. The Stark wipes off very easily — noticeably easier than carnauba. The shine underneath is immediate and significant.
Step 7: Do the Top and Interior
Work your way across the rest of the boat — cockpit, gunnel tops, console area. Same process throughout.
Step 8: Finish the Trim and Metal
Use Back to Black on plastic trim and the acrylic windshield. Use a metal polish on all metal surfaces. None of this is part of the polymer process, but while the boat is already apart and clean, it’s the right time to hit everything.
Step 9: Let It Cure Before Splashing
I was advised to wait 2–3 days before putting the boat back in the water. Plan accordingly.
Pro Tips
The DA is not optional if you’re doing a full boat. I did the outside by hand to show it can be done, and it can. But it’s exhausting and I wouldn’t want to repeat it. If you own a boat larger than a center console, just buy a DA orbital. It’ll pay for itself in time saved on the first application.
The water test tells you everything. Bead vs. sheet is the most reliable way to know where you are in the wax lifecycle at any given point. Get in the habit of spraying a section when you come in and watching what the water does. You’ll know when it’s time before the boat starts getting dirty.
Polymer exposes bad gel coat. One thing I didn’t expect: once the Stark was on, I could clearly see a thin spot in the gel coat that the wax had been masking. If your gel coat has any wear areas, they’re going to show up clearly under a high-quality sealant. Not a problem with the product — just something to be aware of.
Final Verdict
The results were impressive. The shine was noticeably better than carnauba, it wiped off easier, and the heat resistance means I’m not looking at a monthly reapplication schedule through the Florida summer. If the 3–6 month durability claim holds up — and I don’t have a reason to doubt it yet — this is a straightforward upgrade over traditional wax for anyone boating in a hot climate.
The labor to apply it by hand is real, but that’s a DA problem, not a product problem. Buy the DA. The rest is easy.
I wouldn’t go back to carnauba on a Florida boat. The monthly grind isn’t worth it when a polymer sealant exists that holds up to this kind of heat.
