If you’ve got more than one battery on your boat — engine, house, trolling motor, whatever — you already know the pain of not knowing which one is dying until it’s too late. You go to fire up the trolling motor and it’s dead, or you come back from a weekend and the house battery is toast because something was drawing on it the whole time you were gone. I got tired of guessing, so I hooked up a Newwire DEEX7 multi-battery monitor to see what it could actually tell me about my boat’s electrical system.

Most boats with three batteries have zero visibility into what those batteries are actually doing. You don’t find out you’ve got a parasitic draw until the battery’s already dead. You don’t know your alternator stopped charging until you’re stranded. A gauge that shows you real voltage and amp draw across every battery on the boat turns “I hope it’s fine” into “I can see exactly what’s going on.”

Step-by-Step Guide
Mount and Wire the Gauge
The DEEX7 pops into a standard 2-1/16″ dash cutout where an old voltage gauge would go. Power comes off the red wire, negative off the yellow wire. That’s what gives the gauge itself power — separate from whatever you’re monitoring.
Hook Up Your Batteries
I ran wires from three batteries into the display. Battery voltages showed up immediately — 13.3V, 26.2V (that one’s the trolling motor battery, running at 24V nominal), and 14.4V. Dead simple, no calibration needed.
Install the Shunt for Amp Draw
Voltage alone doesn’t tell you if something’s actively pulling power. To see amp draw, the shunt tool goes in-line on the ground side — everything on the house side of the boat grounds through the shunt instead of straight to the battery. One side of the shunt is positive, one is negative, and the DEEX7 reads the amperage crossing it.
Configure the Input
In the menu, go to Setup, pick the input number you wired the shunt to, set it Active, choose the output ratio (mine was 150 amp by 50 mV), and name it. Once that’s done, turning on a load — I used the bilge pump — shows up live as amp draw. My bilge pump pulled right around 9 amps.
Set Up Bilge Pump Cycle Monitoring
On a separate input, I wired the float switch and bilge pump so the gauge counts pump cycles instead of amps. In Setup, set the input type to “Bilge Monitor,” name it, and set your alarm cycle threshold. Every time the pump fires, the cycle count ticks up and shows as a percentage based on the interval you set.
Pro Tips
- If you’ve got four batteries, just run all four into the gauge and rename each flex input to match — battery 1, 2, 3, 4 — so you get a full picture at a glance instead of guessing which reading belongs to which battery.
- Watch voltage while a component runs, not just at rest. If you see something like 11.9V and then start your engine, that tells you your alternator isn’t charging — you wouldn’t catch that from a resting voltage reading alone.
- The shunt only shows draw for whatever’s wired through it. If you want to catch a parasitic draw, everything on your house side needs to ground through that shunt, not just some of it, or you’ll get a reading that looks fine when it isn’t.
Final Verdict
This is worth doing yourself. Wiring is genuinely simple — Deutsch connectors on the back, four wires to get basic voltage monitoring running, and the menu system is straightforward once you’re in it. The shunt setup for amp draw takes a little more thought since you need to rewire your ground path, but it’s not complicated. If you’ve got multiple batteries and you’re tired of finding out one’s dead at the worst possible time, this is a low-effort, high-value upgrade.
