This boat sat in the woods for years. Rats, rodents, dirt, oxidation — the whole nine yards. When I pulled it out, the gelcoat cleaning looked chalky and faded. It looked like it belonged in a scrapyard, not on the water. If you have an older fiberglass boat under a cover with that dull finish, this method helps. It lets you revive the boat without buying a new one.
Why It Matters
Oxidation isn’t just cosmetic. Once that gelcoat starts breaking down, it gets rougher, holds dirt and grime, and keeps degrading faster the longer you leave it. On a Florida boat, that sun is brutal on gelcoat year-round, and if you let oxidation go too long, no amount of wax is going to save it — you’re stuck wet sanding just to get back to a surface you can actually polish. Catching it early (or committing to doing it right when it’s bad) protects your investment and keeps resale value where it should be.

- Presta Super Cut compound — my go-to cutting compound, roughly 600 grit, cuts oxidation and scratches better than anything else I used on this project
- Oxidization remover — used for initial cutting on sections before switching to Presta
- Color restore polish — a lighter cutting polish; works okay but doesn’t cut nearly as deep as Presta
- 800 grit wet sand paper — for the badly oxidized/cracked sections that compound alone couldn’t fix
- Wool buffing pads (rotary/drill polisher) — for compounding and polishing; new pads are more aggressive and fling material everywhere
- Collinite Metal Magic — polish I used on the rails; hands down my favorite product in this whole process
- Wax and sealant — final protective layer, used on sections after polishing
- Acetone — for cleaning up the rub rail
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Wash It First
Nothing fancy here. Soap and water, wipe down the whole hull to get the loose dirt and grime off before you touch a buffer to it. Skipping this step just means you’re grinding dirt into the gelcoat with your pad.
2. Assess the Damage
Once it’s clean and dry, look closely — not just from a few feet back. Up close I could see cloudiness, actual cracks in some spots, and scratches that a straight compound wasn’t going to touch. That told me which sections needed a full wet sand versus which ones could get away with compound only.
3. Wet Sand the Bad Sections
For anywhere too oxidized or scratched for compound to fix, I wet sanded at 800 grit. It looks awful right after — chalky, full of visible scratch marks — but that’s expected. You’re leveling the surface so the compound has something to actually cut into. One thing worth knowing: it gets too hot in the Florida sun to wet sand effectively past a certain point in the day, so plan around the heat.
4. Compound the Whole Hull
Using a rotary polisher with a wool pad, I ran Presta Super Cut over the wet-sanded areas. I then applied straight compound over sections that didn’t need sanding. This is where the real transformation happens during gelcoat cleaning—dull, faded gelcoat starts showing actual reflection again. Heat is the enemy here too; around 106°F, the compound started burning on the pad, making it harder to work.
5. Polish
After compounding, there are still swirl marks left behind from the pad. That’s normal — compound removes oxidation and scratches, but it also leaves its own marks that need to be polished out. I switched to a clean pad and worked the polish over every section I’d just compounded.
6. Wax
Last step. Once polished, wax goes on to seal and protect the finish. I used a wax and sealant product on some sections after running low on other polish, and finished the rails and console separately with Collinite Metal Magic.
7. Detail the Small Stuff
Once the hull was done, I hit the rub rail with acetone to clean it up (didn’t have rubber/vinyl protectant on hand, so a wipe-down was the move), vacuumed the carpet since new pads fling material everywhere, and wiped down the dash and console.
Pro Tips
- There is no “one step” product, no matter what the label says. Every all-in-one compound/polish/wax product I’ve tried oversells what it can actually do on genuinely oxidized gelcoat. This project was wash, wet sand, compound, polish, wax — five real steps, not one.
- New buffing pads are more aggressive and messier. They fling material everywhere, especially on a boat with carpet instead of open fiberglass. Budget extra time for cleanup, and don’t assume a brand-new pad behaves like the broken-in one you were just using.
- Work around the heat, not through it. Compound burns on the pad in extreme heat, and wet sanding gets miserable fast once the sun’s directly on the hull. Early morning or late afternoon sessions save you both time and materials.
Final Verdict
This is absolutely worth doing yourself if you’ve got the time and don’t mind sweating through it — the results speak for themselves on a boat that looked scrapyard-bound. That said, it’s not a weekend project if the oxidation is bad enough to need wet sanding across the whole hull. Between the wash, sand, compound, polish, and wax stages, plus fighting Florida heat the entire time, this ate a full day-plus of real labor. If you’ve got a mildly oxidized boat, compound and polish alone might get you there in an afternoon. If yours looks like this one did, block out real time for it — but the before-and-after makes it worth every hour.
